- DOWN IN THE PIT: SOCAL VAL – UNCOVERING TNA’S NEWEST KNOCKOUT
By Ryan Jevec
She stands 5’7” (5’11” with the ever present high heels) with flowing red hair and a bronze tan to match. With a style all her own and an unbelievably charming and charismatic personality, this ringside beauty has the ability to engage a raucous crowd like no other. Just who is this ‘knockout’ that I speak of? She is the newest addition to the TNA Knockouts, she is SoCal Val.
If you have had the opportunity to check out the TNA Knockouts DVD, and judging by the sales numbers, you have, then you no doubt are familiar with the redheaded bombshell known as SoCal Val. However, those close to the beauty know that she is so much more than just a pretty face. Behind all the glitz and glamour and glare of the spotlight is the mind and heart of a true student of the industry of professional wrestling.
Hot on the heels of the TNA Knockouts photo shoot with Sole Collector Magazine, her multiple photos in the new TNA Knockouts 2007 calendar and her current appearance on the cover of Ringside Magazine in Germany, SoCal Val is poised to make an impact in both TNA and the entire world of professional wrestling.
Having just returned from a whirlwind trip to Detroit for Bound for Glory, SoCal Val graciously offered up a few minutes of her time to answer some questions that will help to give a full perspective of just who she is and perhaps, what she is capable of. Tracing her roots back all the way to her initial entry into the world of professional wrestling, here now is an in-depth look at SoCal Val.
JEVEC: SoCal Val, thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. I know many fans already know who you are, but with your newly affirmed status as a TNA Knockout, there are so many more legions of fans who are now just getting to know you.
SOCAL VAL: No problem at all. My pleasure.
JEVEC: Ok, on to the questions at hand. Just how long have you been involved in the business of professional wrestling?
SOCAL VAL: Next March will make five years that I’ve been involved in this sport. My first show was actually just three days after my sixteenth birthday.
JEVEC: Sixteen? Amazing. At an age when most youths are struggling to figure out what they want to do with their lives, you are already set on the road to stardom. Many in the industry always talk of a specific aspect of the business that drew them in, first as a fan, and then as a performer. What is it about professional wrestling that ‘drew ‘ you in?
SOCAL VAL: What drew me in initially was the pageantry of the business. I found myself liking the athletes and the dramatic aspect of it all. It means so much more to me to watch a match that’s had a lot leading up to it. An interesting feud, someone exacting revenge, etc. can get pretty intense. That is when you not only grab someone’s attention, but you hold onto it. When it really means something, you become hooked and once you reach that final do-or-die moment, you find yourself on the edge of your seat with butterflies in your stomach. That is the magic of wrestling right there. If you aren’t a wrestling fan you just can’t understand that feeling.
JEVEC: Moving along to TNA Wrestling, just how did you get involved with the company?
SOCAL VAL: Well, it’s a little known fact, but initially I worked for TNA once on a show in Nashville, managing a team on Xplosion. I was sixteen at the time. The only person I knew in the company was Jerry Lynn, as we had done an event together a few months prior in California. He gave me a lot of advice. That was the biggest event I had ever done up to that point.
Once TNA moved to Orlando and the iMPACT! Zone, I attended every live show. I brought tapes and resumes with me every single time. It really was just a matter of letting them know I was available for whatever they could use me for. Eventually, they realized I just wanted to contribute to the show in any way possible and that I wanted it for the right reasons. I have to give thanks to David Sahadi and Jeremy Borash as they were the first ones to give me an opportunity.
JEVEC: For those not familiar, what is your current role within TNA?
SOCAL VAL: I’ve done several different things within TNA ranging from merchandise commercials to co-hosting Xplosion and even some backstage interviews. However, my main role is serving as the ring girl for live events. It’s a lot like managing in the sense that your job is to get a reaction from the crowd, and in accomplishing that, it is all about timing. Plus, as an added bonus, I have the best seat in the house to see all the action that TNA has to offer.
JEVEC: Sounds like some serious multi-tasking, but well worth all of the effort. What has your experience in TNA Wrestling been like thus far?
SOCAL VAL: I couldn’t ask for a better experience! I’m meeting wrestling fans from all over the world. I’m making new friends within the business and I’m doing what I love to do. It really doesn’t get much better than that.
JEVEC: It certainly does sound great opportunity and a wonderful experience. Is there anything that makes TNA special or different to you?
SOCAL VAL: The entire atmosphere is different. From the vibe backstage to the intensity of our crowds at live events, both in Orlando and abroad. I think we have some of the most diehard fans in the world and it is touching to know just how loyal they are. These fans are so hungry for an alternative that they truly appreciate what we do and why we do it. It is just awesome to know that we as a group (TNA talent) have the ability to inspire and touch so many lives.
JEVEC: The passion you exude for TNA and wrestling in general is both undeniable and quite admirable. No doubt though, that passion has been challenged by both success and setbacks within the industry. That being said, what has been your most trying experience since being involved in the business and what has been the most gratifying?
SOCAL VAL: The thing that has worked against me ever since I began this journey is my age. It’s something I cannot change nor apologize for, but it gets in the way for several reasons. It’s especially frustrating when you aren’t taken seriously because of it. I’ve had to work that much harder in other areas to make up for it. The upside to starting so early in wrestling is that I’ve been around to learn that much more. By the time I’m 26, I’ll have been in wrestling for 10 years. That is a lot of knowledge learned at a young age, an age where most women are just getting into wrestling.
As for my most satisfying moment in TNA, well, being featured as a TNA Knockout to me, personally, is what I am most proud of. To be an official part of the roster and to be grouped with Ms. Brooks, Gail, Christy and Jackie as a Knockout is exactly what I have worked so hard for. In fact, when I received my TNA contract, I celebrated for a week straight!
JEVEC: You certainly do have a lot to be proud of in TNA. In fact two of your more recent accomplishments are being a part of the TNA Knockouts photo shoot for Sole Collector Magazine as well as being featured in the TNA Knockouts DVD. What were those experiences like?
SOCAL VAL: The magazine shoot for Sole Collector was hilarious and so much fun, as I was able to do the shoot with Ms. Brooks all day. That made the shoot that much more enjoyable. I was happy the DVD caught some of our goofing off, because that is how we are every day at work. Each Knockout had a theme to her photo shoot in the magazine and I went with what I know best, which is the “Princess of Pro Wrestling,” look complete with tiara and all. Somehow we pulled it off, as the fact that I was wearing tennis shoes was totally out of my realm. So I did what any normal person would do and put a mink coat and diamonds with them!
The Knockouts DVD was a lot of fun and big step for all of us as a group. We all know each other a lot better now and have grown much closer because of it. After the filming of the DVD everything seemed more like a team effort. We were all extremely please with the finished product. It is a great way to give the fans a better feel for our individual personalities. For me it was, much like this interview, a formal introduction to the fans as to who I was and what I can do. For that reason, I tried to be careful as to how I was received. It was nerve racking at times because not only am I the newest “Knockout,” but I am also the youngest. I appear to be pretty confident when I’m working, but in all honesty, it’s hard for me to even put myself up in the same category as the other Knockouts, especially since I was fans of theirs before TNA.
JEVEC: All of your achievements having been obtained in such a relatively short amount of time is absolutely amazing, but also serves as direct evidence of your commitment to this industry. Most recently, you have achieved perhaps your single greatest achievement, which is being featured on your very first magazine cover, the current issue of Ringside Magazine in Germany. What are your thoughts on that?
SOCAL VAL: I am still in shock over that. It is my first magazine cover ever! It is extra special to me because they included an interview where I had the opportunity to promote TNA and the TNA Knockouts to our German fans. It’s amazing that we reach that many people. I was honored to have been a small part of that.
JEVEC: That is incredible. I know we don’t have much time left, but there are just a few more questions for the fans. With all that you have accomplished thus far in your young career, is there anything you would do differently?
SOCAL VAL: I wouldn’t change a single thing. Whatever I did, ultimately landed me in TNA. I still don’t know how exactly, but I thank God for every opportunity I’ve been blessed with.
JEVEC: Looking towards the distant future, what would be your career aspirations and do you have any desire to ever get in the ring and wrestle for TNA?
SOCAL VAL: I would simply like to be the best at what I do. Period. The glamorous side of the business is great, but I want to be remembered for what I do, not how I look. Anyone can get dolled up and do a photo shoot, but not everyone takes the time to study tapes, practice, and really hone their craft. It’s what you do on the show that is important. Looking good while you’re doing it is just icing on the cake. It’s secondary. I think people sometimes forget that.
As for wrestling for TNA, sure I would do it. The other Knockouts and I have fans from all over the world telling us they would like to see a women’s division. We’re all excited at the thought of it. I think it will happen when the time is right.
JEVEC: That is a great perspective. Being remembered for what you’ve accomplished and the impact those accomplishments had on the industry is the mark of a true professional. What are your thoughts on the immediate future for the both the TNA Knockouts as an entity and yourself personally?
SOCAL VAL: We are still establishing ourselves both as a group and as individuals. It’s such a diverse group of women with such varied talents that the sky is the limit for us. The reason we will succeed is because we all wish the best for each other. We’re all happy for any girl in the company because we know it only means good things for all of us.
For my future personally, only time will tell. All I can do is guarantee you that when TNA hands me the ball I’ll run like hell with it. So stay tuned.
JEVEC: It would seem that there truly are no limits on the potential of yourself, the Knockouts and especially TNA. I want to thank you again for taking the time to sit down and let the fans have a chance to know you a little better. To close this series out, one final question......what message would you like to send out to any person who is being inspired by you and has the dream of becoming part of the world of professional wrestling?
SOCAL VAL: Thank you for allowing me this opportunity. It has been my pleasure. To anyone who would aspire to become a part of this industry, I would like to tell them just how important it is to be yourself. The business doesn’t change you. You only change when you let yourself or others around you change you. People expect you to become something you’re not, so why not do the unexpected and stay down to earth? If only for shock value! I also never agree with the “get to the top by any means,” methodology. It’s rather vulgar and I think it sends the wrong message. If you want to go somewhere in this business you can get there by being a good person and helping others in addition to helping yourself. You’ll hear horror stories of people sabotaging others and jeopardizing their own morals to get opportunities. Even if these people get their faster than you, you’ll want to know that when you’ve made it, you made it because you did things the right way. ******************************************************************************************** WWECW News: Ratings, affluence, rencontres, Trish à la téléréalité, ...
